Biography
Born with an innate talent and love for music, Chandra was named Subhalaxmi, inspired by the legendary MS Subbulakshmi, whose voice continues to inspire her. Over the years, the name transformed—first to Chinmoyee and then to Chandra - yet her musical essence remained the same.
Chandra is also the founder of Kalakar Arts UK (www.kalakararts.org), an organisation that curates world-class concerts, bringing together artists and audiences to celebrate music in its purest form. Whether performing on stage, curating events, or mentoring upcoming musicians, Chandra's mission has always been to bridge cultures through the universal language of music. Kalakar Arts UK is home to Tale of Tawaifs, a groundbreaking live stage musical series that brings to life the rich and often overlooked legacy of Indian courtesans. As pioneers of music, dance, and poetry, the tawaifs played a crucial role in shaping the cultural and artistic landscape of India. This production intricately weaves historical narratives with mesmerizing performances, offering audiences an immersive journey through the elegance, resilience, and artistry of these remarkable women.
As the co-founder and artistic director of Saudha, Society of Poetry and Indian Music (www.saudha.org), Chandra has dedicated herself to blending the rich traditions of Indian classical music with literature and poetry, creating unique and immersive artistic experiences. Saudha has been instrumental in bringing together musicians, poets, and artists from diverse backgrounds, fostering an appreciation for the deep connection between music and the spoken word.
Chandra's expertise lies in Indian classical, semi-classical, and world music, blending traditional ragas with contemporary influences to create something timeless yet innovative. Her performances have captivated audiences across the UK and beyond, resonating with listeners from all walks of life.
Beyond the stage, Chandra believes in the power of music to heal, inspire, and unite. She has started Pandit A Kanan Music Foundation that teaches music to underprivileged children. She continues to explore new horizons, collaborate with artists from different genres, and push the boundaries of her artistry.
